Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract: Supporting Understanding for All Pupils

With the development of teaching for mastery in maths, the need for variation in approach and context has become a vital part of the learning process. Along with this comes the need for children to be supported in their understanding in a variety of ways. One of the most effective ways is through the use of the concrete-pictorial abstract approach.

About this course

Prior to the introduction of the mastery approach, many teachers would agree that concrete resources were generally used to support lower attaining pupils with their understanding in maths and store cupboards were filled with trays of maths equipment that barely saw the light of day. But how can we use these resources to support all children with their understanding and develop their reasoning and explanations. This training will: 

  • Explore the use of the CPA approach to support and to extend thinking
  • Give you practical ideas that you can take away and easily put in place
  • Support you in driving up standards of teaching and learning in maths
