About this course

As teachers, we are often exposed to a variety of educational theories and pedagogical thinking. However, it’s not always easy to find ways to bring new ideas into the classroom in a cohesive, long-term, impactful way.

Cognitive Development in Practice is an inspiring one-day CPD course, providing real-world, practical ideas to help support schools in developing their ‘thinking learners’. It will help you to give ownership of the learning process back to the children, to improve outcomes from Early Years through to Year 6. The course content is based on contemporary research, best practice from a range of schools across the UK and the outcomes of our own Innovation Projects.

We aim to unpick what makes teaching and learning great – to enable you to focus on excellence and how to achieve it.

The training will:

  • Enable you to lead your ‘thinking school’ to excellence
  • Focus on developing pupils’ questioning, in whole class situations and in pupil-to-pupil questioning
  • Consider the development of pupils as critical friends, moving beyond peer assessment
  • Look at what reasoning and thinking mean, and how to develop reasoning and thinking skills from Early Years to Year 6
  • Help teachers to coach pupils to: plan their learning more effectively; monitor the learning, identifying key steps to keep on track; and evaluate their learning, recognising how they could have tackled the problem differently
  • Give practical suggestions for what this could look like in your classroom
  • Provide you with a monitoring framework, which focuses on the learning and not the teaching as a way to assess the quality of the provision in classrooms

Audience:

  • Class Teachers
  • Subject Leaders
  • Headteachers and SLT
  • EYFS, KS1 and KS2
