“Disciplinary knowledge” became a bit of a buzz-phrase in education in 2021, and this has caused some anxiety for teachers and leaders across the country. This short course explores what the term means within computing, and (more importantly) how to teach it.
‘Disciplinary knowledge’ is a relatively new term. What it means is perhaps clearer in some subjects than in others - for instance in science it’s not dissimilar to what we previously called ‘scientific enquiry’. In computing it’s closely related to the idea of ‘computational thinking’, but it also answers the wider question: What does it mean to work like a computer scientist, a software engineer, an IT technician?
