Disciplinary Knowledge in Computing

“Disciplinary knowledge” became a bit of a buzz-phrase in education in 2021, and this has caused some anxiety for teachers and leaders across the country. This INSET explores what the term means within computing, and (more importantly) how to teach it.

  • Practical and engaging
  • Breaks down abstract ideas into teachable categories
  • Fully in line with the 2019 Framework and current Ofsted thinking

About this INSET

‘Disciplinary knowledge’ is a relatively new term.  What it means is perhaps clearer in some subjects than in others - for instance in science it’s not dissimilar to what we previously called ‘scientific enquiry’.  In computing it’s closely related to the idea of ‘computational thinking’, but it also answers the wider question: What does it mean to work like a computer scientist, a software engineer, an IT technician?

This course will:

  • Provide you with practical and engaging approaches for teaching disciplinary knowledge in computing
  • Unpick the confusion around related terms
  • Reduce your anxiety about this abstract concept!

Audience:

  • Headteachers and SLT
  • Computer Leads / ICT coordinators
  • EYFS, KS1, KS2
