This INSET uses evidence-based research and educational thinking to explore what we mean by ‘psychological safety’ in schools, and the way this links to the mental health and wellbeing of staff and pupils.

About this INSET

The course will help leaders consider how to make their school environment and culture psychologically safe, so that it supports wellbeing and team performance.

Course objectives:

  • Develop understanding of the concept of ‘psychological safety’ and its links to mental health and wellbeing
  • Use research and evidence-based practice to deepen thinking about psychological safety, for instance with aspects like trust and agency
  • Explore the links between psychological safety, OFSTED and the curriculum
  • Get to know what a psychologically safe-classroom will look like and how it benefits pupil and staff mental health and learning
  • Consider how psychological safety within the workplace can support team performance
  • Practical ideas and strategies to implement back in school
