Deep Learning: Developing a Toolkit for Revision, Study and Exam Skills

Effective study skills have been identified as a way of improving the performance of all learners and of closing the gap between boys and girls. This course will look at a range of tried and trusted techniques, but will also move beyond the recognised approaches we may be familiar with, to look at new, creative and specific approaches to learning that will both support exam/revision skills and encourage deep learning.

  • Create a toolkit of engaging revision ideas
  • Consider ideas that can be used across year groups to support study skills
  • Link the way we are studying and the exam and curriculum demands
  • Help students develop skills that will be essential for the next stages of the educational journey

About this course

This will be a highly practical session with plenty of opportunities to actually try out the techniques ourselves and see how they can be adapted for a range of different subjects and disciplines. The course will be appropriate for teachers who wish to support children in that run-up to exams, but also we will see how all the techniques can be used throughout the year to help our learners with embedding both the substantive knowledge and the disciplinary knowledge they need.

  • Identify what deep learning looks like
  • Use the Path to Success to encourage ‘deep learning’
  • Develop sequenced and progressive schemes of work and learning activities
  • Integrate ‘flipped’ approaches to learning
  • Create a study skills toolkit for the classroom as part of everyday learning, as well as for revision if required
  • Practical ways to embed ‘struggle’ and ‘thinking hard’ into lessons
