Course overview:

2019 marked a big shift in Ofsted focus, but it isn’t a move ‘away from’ the core subjects. There is certainly a stronger emphasis on foundation subjects, but it’s important that high standards are maintained in the Core as well. RE has an uneasy position in all of this: in Faith Schools it is a core subject but it lacks the status of English and maths; it may now be left behind in the drive to improve foundation subjects. In non-Faith Schools it has an ambiguous position on the edge of the National Curriculum.

This three-part series guides RE leaders through the new Framework, and provides them with dozens of practical ideas. 

Part 1 sets out the expectations, inspection guidance, and overarching views of excellent curriculum design. It will cover:

  • OFSTED’s view of curriculum quality;
  • How to articulate your vision and values;
  • How to make your RE curriculum pupil-focused and school-centric;
  • Ways to raise and maintain the profile of RE, and standards within it.

Part 2 looks at how you might implement your vision for RE. It will cover:

  • What it means to lead RE in the new Framework;
  • What to expect from a ‘Deep Dive’;
  • How to share and embed expectations;
  • Assessment and monitoring strategies that enhance pupil outcomes;
  • How to understand and embed cultural capital;
  • How to establish equality of accessibility.

Part 3 looks at ways to judge the impact of your school’s RE curriculum. It will cover:

  • Planning for the future, supporting staff, and CPD.
